Quick answer: Fitted sheets shrink because natural cotton fibres and the woven fabric relax and change dimension during washing and drying. Heat, tumble drying and poor manufacturing tolerances can make the problem considerably worse.
A fitted sheet that fitted perfectly when new but suddenly seems determined not to stretch over the final corner of the mattress is frustratingly common.
Sometimes the sheet really has shrunk. Sometimes the mattress, topper and protector are simply deeper than the fitted sheet was designed to accommodate. And sometimes the real problem began before the sheet ever reached your home: it was manufactured without enough allowance for the natural dimensional change of cotton.
Having spent time working directly with bedding manufacturers and developing our own fitted sheets, we have learned that shrinkage isn't simply a question of whether cotton shrinks. Good manufacturers know that it will and design accordingly.
That distinction matters.
Cotton shrinkage is more complicated than individual cotton fibres simply becoming shorter.
During spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing, yarns and fabrics experience tension. When cotton is subsequently exposed to water, movement and drying, some of those stresses can be released and the fabric structure moves towards a more relaxed state.
Textile specialists call this dimensional change.
CottonWorks, the technical education platform developed by Cotton Incorporated, defines shrinkage as a negative dimensional change and explains that fabric construction, processing, wet finishing and subsequent laundering can all influence the finished dimensions of a cotton textile. There is another interesting piece of textile science involved.
When cotton gets wet, its fibres swell. Research referenced by the Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute notes that the diameter of cotton fibres can increase substantially when wet. Within a woven fabric, this affects the path taken by the yarns and can cause the structure of the cloth to contract. So shrinking sheets aren't necessarily evidence of bad cotton.
A small amount of dimensional change is a normal characteristic of natural cotton bedding.
Excessive or uneven shrinkage is a different matter.
When we started looking closely at fitted-sheet manufacturing, one of the important lessons was that you cannot sensibly manufacture natural cotton bedding as though its dimensions will never change.
Our manufacturers work with a typical shrinkage allowance of approximately 3–5% for high-quality long-staple cotton.
That means the dimensions at the cutting and manufacturing stage have to anticipate what happens when the fabric is subsequently washed.
Our 270 thread count cotton percale and 300 thread count cotton sateen aren't sold as pre-shrunk fabrics. Instead, the fabric is stabilised during manufacture through processes including resting and finishing, and dimensional performance is tested.
This reflects a much broader principle in textile manufacturing. In other words, fitted-sheet shrinkage is partly a laundry issue, but it is also a manufacturing issue.
A duvet cover can shrink slightly without you immediately noticing.
A fitted sheet doesn't have that luxury.
It has to stretch across a fixed mattress width and length, travel down the sides and remain underneath the mattress while being held under tension by its elasticated edge.
Lose even a relatively small amount of usable fabric and the difference can become obvious.
We have seen the classic symptoms with sheets from other brands:
the first three corners fit normally but the fourth becomes difficult to pull over;
corners begin creeping upwards during the night;
the sheet feels noticeably tighter after repeated washes;
one dimension appears to have contracted more than another;
the elastic is blamed when the actual problem is insufficient fabric.
We've experienced sheets that started with a perfectly good fit and became progressively more difficult after repeated hot washing.
We've also seen inexpensive sheets shrink unevenly. That is particularly frustrating because a fitted sheet can then feel twisted or permanently poorly fitted rather than simply smaller.
One reassuring point is that cotton doesn't normally keep getting progressively smaller indefinitely.
Research into cotton shrinkage shows that much of the available dimensional change can occur during the early wetting and drying cycles as stresses within the fabric are released.
Cotton Incorporated's technical guidance notes that several wetting and drying cycles may be required for fabric to reach fully relaxed dimensions, although one cycle can account for around 90% of the available shrinkage under the conditions discussed in its technical bulletin. That explains why a new fitted sheet may change slightly during its first few washes and then settle.
It also explains why appropriate manufacturing tolerances matter so much.
We often hear:
"My fitted sheet fitted when I bought it, but now it's too tight."
One of the first things worth checking is how it has been washed and dried.
A common combination is repeated hot washes followed by a high tumble-dryer setting.
Temperature matters, but tumble drying introduces another factor: mechanical action.

This is why endlessly tumbling already-dry cotton bedding isn't particularly kind to it.

For quality cotton bedding:
The care label should always take priority because construction and finishing vary between products.
Interestingly, standard textile testing recognises that washing conditions matter. AATCC TM135, a recognised test method for assessing dimensional change after home laundering, uses different washing temperatures, agitation cycles and drying procedures when evaluating fabric performance. That is a useful reminder that "I washed it" doesn't describe a single process. How you wash and dry cotton matters.
This is probably the most useful practical check in this article.
Getting the dimensions right in the first place matters just as much as allowing for shrinkage, which is why we’ve put together a separate guide explaining why fitted sheets never fit and how to choose the correct size.
Measure the actual mattress rather than relying on the manufacturer's original specification.
Measure:
Pay particular attention to depth.
If your mattress measures 30cm deep and you buy a fitted sheet with a 30cm pocket, there is virtually no spare depth to travel beneath the mattress.
We prefer allowing approximately 3–5cm of additional pocket depth beyond the measured mattress depth.
So a mattress measuring 30cm deep is generally better suited to a fitted sheet with approximately 33–35cm or more usable depth than one that finishes precisely at 30cm.
This isn't purely about shrinkage. The sheet needs enough material to travel down the mattress side and underneath it so that the elastic can do its job.
A mattress topper can therefore create what looks like a shrinking-sheet problem without the sheet having changed very much at all.
When choosing a replacement, look for sufficient pocket depth as well as the quality and construction of the fabric. Our organic cotton fitted bed sheets are available in standard and deep-pocket options, making it easier to match the sheet to the actual depth of your mattress.
Fibre quality isn't a magic defence against dimensional change. All natural cotton fabrics can change dimension.
But fibre, yarn construction, weave, finishing and manufacturing tolerances collectively affect how a fabric behaves.
For our cotton bedding we chose long-staple organic cotton, using a crisp 270TC percale and smoother 300TC sateen construction.
The organic status of the cotton is independently supported through the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). GOTS covers certified organic fibres and processing through the textile manufacturing supply chain; its current standard includes certification and auditing requirements from the first processing of organic fibres onwards. Our cotton bedding is also OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified. This is separate from shrinkage performance: STANDARD 100 concerns testing textiles for harmful substances, and OEKO-TEX specifically classifies bed linen among products with direct skin contact. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100
That's an important distinction. Certifications should tell you what they actually certify, rather than being used as vague badges suggesting a product is superior in every possible respect.
Both percale and sateen can experience cotton shrinkage because both can be woven from cotton fibres.
The difference between them is primarily their weave construction.
Percale uses a simpler, balanced weave that produces the familiar crisp, breathable feel associated with traditional cotton bed sheets. Sateen uses a different weave structure with longer yarn floats, producing its smoother surface and characteristic subtle lustre.
Shrinkage cannot therefore be predicted simply by seeing "percale" or "sateen" on the packaging.

The quality of the manufacturing matters as much as the weave name.
Not necessarily.
A modest amount of dimensional change in natural cotton is normal. What would concern us is excessive, abnormal or uneven shrinkage despite the sheet being cared for correctly.
If a fitted sheet has become dramatically smaller, ask four questions:
That helps distinguish normal cotton relaxation from a potential product problem.
They can. Cotton is a natural fibre and cotton fabrics can experience dimensional change during laundering. How much depends on fabric construction, manufacturing, finishing and how the sheet is washed and dried.
Higher temperatures can contribute to dimensional change, but temperature isn't the only factor. Agitation, drying method, fabric construction and previous processing all matter. Unless hygiene requirements dictate otherwise, follow the manufacturer's care label rather than automatically choosing a hotter wash.
Sometimes a slightly contracted cotton sheet can relax when damp and be gently reshaped, but there is no guarantee it will permanently return to its original dimensions. Prevention is far more reliable.
It can contribute. Tumble drying combines drying with mechanical movement, and cotton research shows significant relaxation can occur as moisture is removed from the fabric. Avoid unnecessarily high heat and prolonged over-drying.
Allowing some additional depth is sensible even before considering shrinkage. We recommend measuring your mattress, including toppers and protectors, and allowing roughly 3–5cm additional pocket depth where possible.
A few percent dimensional change can be within the tolerances manufacturers work with for natural cotton textiles, although there isn't one universal percentage applicable to every sheet. Construction, finishing, testing method and care conditions all affect the result.
The important question isn't whether cotton can shrink.
It is whether the bedding has been designed, manufactured and cared for with that natural behaviour in mind.
A good fitted sheet shouldn't require a wrestling match every time you change the bed. Measure the mattress properly, allow some spare pocket depth, follow the washing instructions and avoid excessive heat and over-drying.
And when choosing cotton bedding, look beyond thread count alone. Fibre quality, fabric construction, finishing, certification and sensible manufacturing tolerances tell you considerably more about how your bed sheets are likely to perform after the first wash — and after the fiftieth.
